Trends in Office Fit-Outs: What’s Hot in 2024
Over the past decade, office interior design has become more and more important. Employees look for a trendy workplace with plenty of lighting, vibrant colours and communal spaces. The shift of focus on office interior design highlights the many benefits of a good design, as it boosts productivity and employee morale while looking great for visitors.
Like with anything, trends ebb and flow throughout the years. And this year, 2024, is no different.
At Jade Aden Interiors, we have designed and installed several small and large-scale office fit-outs this year and have noticed a few trends. In this blog, we want to share some with you so you can get some inspiration for your office refurbishment.
Popular Materials
So far, in 2024, we have seen a pattern in the types of materials that are being chosen for office interior design.
- Sustainable materials – recycled and upcycled materials are used to add character to an office space while reducing the waste and environmental impact of the redesign. Materials such as wood, metal and plastic are easy to reuse. Wood is popular as it can be sanded down and repainted to fit the branding within the office.
- Biodegradable materials – large amounts of furniture are now made from cork, bamboo, and mycelium, again reducing the environmental impact of the fit-out.
- Acoustic materials – as open-plan offices continue to be popular, there is an emphasis on soundproofing materials and furniture to reduce echoes and noise pollution within the space, allowing everyone to concentrate and moderate noise levels.
- Biophilic design – greenery and natural elements create a connection with nature, which promotes well-being and reduces stress. As we are becoming more conscious about mental health in the workspace, these elements are being embraced.
Design Aesthetics
The design aesthetic in an office is heavily influenced by your branding, which will likely dictate the colours and style used within the office. However, overarching patterns are being seen this year.
- Minimalism – people don’t want clutter in their office or on their desks – a tidy desk equals a tidy mind, after all. Office renovations are seeking to declutter the office so people can focus on their work and feel there is space to breathe rather than getting distracted by the feelings of claustrophobia. Sleek and clean lines are the focus of office design.
- Functional decor – everything has a purpose in the office. As people are downsizing their offices with hybrid working still popular, space needs to be optimised, so the combination of aesthetics and practicality is imperative with decor.
- Bright and bold colours – colour psychology suggests that certain bright colours boost creativity and energy, so we are seeing a lot of shades of green, blue, and yellow.
- Accent walls and art – people don’t want to be surrounded by block colour, so feature walls that create a focal point in the office with eye-catching artwork and designs are becoming more popular. This is often something that reflects the company or industry.
- Flexible spacing – offices are finding a balance between private and open, so demountable partitioning or glass partitioning are becoming popular parts of our office fit-outs. These allow space to be separated while keeping an element of openness and adaptability.
Technological Integrations
Technology is ever-changing and will always impact office fit-out trends.
- Smart booking systems – with people working remotely and not having dedicated desks, we are seeing online desk and meeting room booking systems implemented. These are reinforced by the technology integrated within the office as access control panels by meeting room doors and sign-in screens for desk bookings at reception.
- Audiovisual technology – with remote meetings commonplace, we are integrating high-quality audiovisual technology in most boardrooms to facilitate collaboration and easy communication between employees and customers.
Evolving Workspace Layouts
Providing several workspaces has become popular, especially in co-working spaces, as they allow staff to choose the environment they want to work in.
- Communal areas – breakout zones that allow team members to go and take a break away from the office are a growing trend as offices create spaces away from the kitchen. These spaces are designed as multi-functional so staff can relax or use them for informal meetings.
- Small meeting rooms – not every internal meeting needs a boardroom, so we are also seeing a common request to create a smaller meeting room where team members can collaborate on projects without disrupting other workers.
- Optimising space – vertical space is being used more efficiently by installing bespoke mezzanine floors, which can be designed to be used in any way that suits your business, from extra storage space to additional desks or communal areas.
