Here are just some of the steps you can take to make your office more environmentally friendly.

Eco-friendly lights

Eco-friendly lights are a great way to make your office more sustainable – old, outdated lighting fixtures can be a pit for inefficient energy usage, and are terrible for the environment as a result.

Nowadays, there are plenty of options for sustainable lighting. However, Halogen light fittings are the go-to right now for a number of reasons: they’re 20-30% more energy efficient than old-fashioned incandescent lights, while still providing the same powerful light source. They’re cheap too, available for as little as £1.

In years to come you may find that LED lights become the standard – they’re currently less effective in terms of light output than their Halogen counterparts, but they have some huge upsides.

Likely to last 100 times longer than Halogen lights, LEDs hugely reduce the amount of waste from broken bulbs. With a better range of colour temperatures, LED lights will be more expensive, but could be the greener and more future-proof option.

CFLs, or Compact Fluorescent Lamps, offer a middle ground. Less efficient than LEDs but also cheaper, they have a few issues with recyclability.

A modern kitchen

Jade Aden are all too familiar with work canteens and kitchens, having installed bespoke designs for a number of companies across the South.

Your kitchen is where employees eat, chat and refuel their batteries; therefore, the area naturally produces waste and rubbish that needs to be thrown away.

Having clearly labelled recycling facilities that the workforce are made aware of will significantly improve the sustainability of this area.

When filling out your kitchen with infrastructure such as appliances, tables and chairs, make sure to avoid plastic wherever possible – wooden picnic benches are great, being natural and cohesive to a social environment.

Lastly, ensure your microwaves, ovens and kettles are modern and energy efficient. You can find this product information online.

Efficient heating systems

Having modern, sustainable heating systems will not only benefit the environment, but your employees too. Portable radiators are commonplace in offices, often old and purely there for convenience.

Not only are these appliances extremely inefficient, they can create a stuffy and slow working environment.

Infrared heating panels are a great option – they absorb the ambient heat in the room, releasing it back into the room over time. Remote controlled and individually independent, heating can be personalised throughout the building, meaning there is better control over energy usage.

Furthermore, there is little temperature gradient between the ceiling and the floor, meaning that draughts are less prominent – removing the need to account for them in energy spend.

Reducing your carbon footprint

Reducing the carbon footprint of your business is an essential part of working towards a sustainable future. By using less energy, less fossil fuels are being burned, meaning it is easier to offset the impact of global warming with renewables.

This means not just engaging in practices such as Cycle to Work schemes and carpooling on the way to work, but bringing your entire infrastructure up to date with modern standards.

Efficient windows

If your office still has single or legacy double-glazed windows in 2021, then that should be changed – quickly! Jade Aden offer window installation as part of our outfitting service, and would be more than happy to replace them with modern, energy efficient and sustainable double/triple glazed windows.

Layered glazing significantly reduces heat loss through windows, meaning lower energy usage, especially during the winter months.

Cycle to Work schemes

Cycle to Work schemes are a fantastic way to cut back on your team’s energy output, by incentivising them to ditch their cars for the journey to work.

Many employees, especially in urban centres and cities, live within reasonable cycling distance – using cars for journeys to work can be especially costly during rush hour, when many drivers are idling in traffic.
