Client: Bravery
Location: Poole, Dorset
We recently completed a two-floor workspace conversion for Bravery, a clothing company based in Poole. The project was to completely transform the existing space to create two separate areas: a workspace for Tobias and his staff members, and a shop and cafe area for the general public.
Having been injured while on duty as part of the UK Special Forces, which left him paralysed from the neck down, Tobias created Bravery as a symbol of waking up each day and facing the challenges of life. Tobias and his staff are passionate about empowering people to chase their dreams and face adversity with courage.
Tobias wanted to create a unique multipurpose space that combines an office for him and his staff, as well as a shop and cafe for the general public to visit and peruse his apparel. The space needed to match the look and feel of their online branding, and it was imperative that it was accessible for Tobias and other wheelchair users.
What We Did
In order to meet the brief required, we transformed the two-floor workspace into a number of distinct areas.
We completed an office fit-out on the 650-square-foot mezzanine. This area was divided into several rooms: an open office space with several desks where the team works, a boardroom for meetings, a storage room for stock, and an office for Tobias.
We were asked to create an industrial feel throughout the upstairs area. This was done by exposing the soffits, which we sprayed matte black in keeping with their brand identity, and adding steel running through the space.
We seperated the office with a crittall-style glass wall, creating a modern feel. Both the office and the boardroom had a suspended ceiling with outside-lit LEDs to bring in more light.
A key requested feature of the communal workspace and office was the floor-to-ceiling glass panels, which would enable Tobias to watch the floor below. After installing them, we added an eye-catching flourish with the Bravery logo as a manifestation.
Finally, we wanted to carry the feel of the downstairs into the office space, particularly in the communal kitchen and in the toilets. The wood effect and colour palette we added perfectly mimicked the downstairs areas, unifying the upstairs working areas with the downstairs client-facing area.
The 2,650 square-foot ground floor space combined the shop selling Bravery products, including clothing and surfboards, cafe seating, and serving areas. With so much to fit in, it was vital we laid the floor out efficiently, ensuring that the space for each zone was maximised. To get as many tables and chairs into the cafe area as possible, we installed a workbench on the wall of one side and several tables and chairs that allowed plenty of room to move around and provided enough seating for busy rushes.
We focused on an oak theme throughout the cafe space, installing oak worktops in the serving area and adding panelling with a solid oak trim that continued the colour and feel throughout the cafe setting area.
Access to the first floor was crucial for the functionality of the space for Tobias, so we also installed a lift off the cafe areas to give access to the mezzanine where he works.
The remainder of the ground floor space was utilised as a shop. We divided the motocross shop from the cafe with glass partitions, detailed with the same crittall banding and a black door. To emphasise the company’s passion for sports, we also installed a world-championship motocross bike in the centre of this area, creating a truly unique experience for customers.
The End Result
The finished building is a multi-purpose space where Tobias and his staff can work while inviting customers to browse their designs or relax. The space creates a community feel with plenty of seating, easy access, and space to work.
Throughout the building, the Bravery branding is key, with black, grey, and white being used as the colour scheme and the font applied where possible.
