In-House Photography Studio for LUSH

Groundbreaking cosmetics company Lush began life in Poole, Dorset back in 1995. Over twenty-five years later, it has become a world-renowned brand famous for its vast range of bath bombs, creams, soaps, and other cosmetics.

Despite their global reach, the owners of Lush chose to stay close to home. Many of their offices and factories are still located in Poole, including their R&D headquarters.

Lush decided to relocate their in-house photography studio from a rental unit in the town centre to their R&D building. They tasked us with creating a fully functional photography space within the building that would fit in neatly alongside the rest of their business’s operations.

What We Did

Our design team converted an existing space in the building into a wide, modern photography studio, with ample room for photography apparatus, model staging, and editing equipment.

To make it ready for use, we fitted out the space with features like soundproof walls, black drapery, and even an ‘ON AIR’ light-up sign to warn people when the studio was in use. We choose to exclusively use white and black paint on the walls – this allowed for clean and even photography lighting, while creating a more streamlined feel throughout the area.

We faced a number of challenges when creating the studio:

We were on a very tight deadline, as the Lush team needed to move their operations into the new space before they reached the end of their old building’s notice period.
We needed to work around the R&D department’s normal operations.
We had to ensure the space was as soundproof as we could manage on the budget given.
We needed to adhere to Lush’s ethical buying guidelines when purchasing materials.

Despite these hurdles, we managed to complete the renovations on time and on budget – a result we were particularly proud of!

The End Result

The final result was a fully kitted out studio suitable for photoshoots of all types and lengths.

Lush were ecstatic with the finished room, giving us this feedback: “The team have moved in and love the space! It means they can do all their shoots there instead of renting some larger units throughout the year.
